Colour-giving substances can be of natural or synthetic origin. Whereas natural substances such as umber, lapis-lazuli, or Siena red contain irregularities and have a mute appearance, synthetic pigments have designed structures and can be extremely bright like ultramarine blue, magenta, or Ferrari Red.
